I Expo You

Characters: Teacher (T), the monitor (M), the Book Worm (B), the Golden Ideas (G), the monitor’s granny (Gr), Handel (H)

Scene 1

(In the teacher’s office, Miss Zhang is talking to the monitor.)

T: You know, as the World Expo is approaching, the international communication has become more and more frequent. A group of German students will come to Shanghai to pay a visit for about a week.

M: It is said they will stay with some local families?

T: Yes, you are right!

M: That’s a very good chance! Can I be one of the receivers? I’m confident about my oral English and my family can afford a spare room!

T: (Smile and nod his head) That’s why I am talking to YOU about this.

M: (excited) Oh, thank you, Mr. Zhao! Thank you! By the way, can I have some helpers?

T: Of course! I wish you got the receiving perfectly!

M: Leave it to me! I will not let you down! (give a salute)

Scene 2

(Monitor is discussing with “Book worm” and “Golden ideas”)

M: Hey, I’ve got good news!

B&G: (gathering) What? What?

M: There’s a chance to receive a German student! Do you want to join me?

B: (Raising her arm) I will!

G: Really! I love that! You know me well, darling! (Give M a good hug.)

M&B: (Pretend to be shivering.)

Scene 3

(In the classroom)

G: (Sigh) I talked to my mother last night about it, but she didn’t support me!

B: (Sad) Me too. My mother said the final exams are coming! I have to focus only on studies!

M: Yeah, it’s a problem. (Thinking) You know what? (B, G look up.) Do you trust yourselves?

B&G: Of course! Why?

M: We all know the reason why our parents don’t support us.

B: They are afraid we will fall behind in studies.

M: Yes, you are right! So if we can keep working hard while doing the mission at the same time, I believe they will say nothing! Of course, if we want to do more like this, we need to prove that we will not fall behind even if we have other things to do. Do you have the confidence to do so?

B&G: Yes, we do!

M: (Put right hand in front of himself) Let’s say ‘come on’!

M&B&G: (Put hands together.) Come on!

Scene 4

(In the Monitor’s home)

M: Welcome to my home, Handel! Take a seat! What do you want to drink, coffee or tea?

H: I prefer tea!

B: Good choice! We Chinese have a long long history of making tea! And we have Jasmine tea, Pu’er tea, Longjing tea, White tea…

G: (Interrupt) A variety of teas, she means.

M: I suggest Longjing tea! It

H: Oh, I know it comes from the West Lake in Hangzhou.

M: Yes, we often compare it to paradise. By the way, we are going to have Jiao Zi for dinner. Do you want to have a try to make Jiao Zi?

H: Great idea! What do we need?

M: Granny!

Gr: (Bring in a basket of dumpling skin and a bowl of dressing) We need these!

H: (Surprised) Wow! Even your granny can speak English!

M: That’s not surprising! Now almost every Shanghainess is learning to speak English because of the coming Expo.

H: Ah, I see. What can I do with these?

Gr: Please follow me!

(They make Jiao Zi together.)

H: Oh, see what I’ve made!

Gr: Very good! You do very good!

M: Yeah, it’s quite uneasy for you to make Jiao Zi for the first time!

H: Thank you! It’ s funny! I like it!

(In a few minutes)

Gr: (Take Jiao Zi off the table.) Please wait a moment!

G: Oh, I’m starving!

B: By the way, Handel, do you know the meaning in eating Jiao Zi?

H: Meaning?

B: Jiao Zi has the similar shape to that of ‘Yuan Bao’.

G: (Show a Yuan Bao) This is it!

H: Ah, it is gold?

B: It is made of gold or silver. Anyway, it represents money!

H: So it means you are eating money while eating Jiao Zi!

B: You are right in some way. Traditionally, we Chinese will eat Jiao Zi on the eve of the new year’s day, wishing we can earn a lot of money in the coming year!

H: Ah, then I’ll eat as many as I can!

Gr: I come back! Now help yourself!

H: (Amazed)Mmm, it’s delicious!

Gr: Eat more, eat more!

Scene 5

(In the next morning)

M&H: Good morning, Granny!

Gr: Good morning! I’m going to play Taiji. (Go out)

H: Taiji? What is Taiji? Is it a Chinese ball?

(Door bell rings)

M: Excuse me. (Open the door) You’re coming!

B&G: Good morning, Handel!

H: Good morning! Just now I was asking about Taiji. What is Taiji?

G: (Voluntarily) I know! I know! Do you want to learn it?

H: Yes, if it doesn’t make trouble.

G: No, it doesn’t. First, you should remember the … er … the lyrics.

M&B: (Look at each other in a puzzle) Lyrics?

G: And follow me. I hold a watermelon…

H: I hold a watermelon…

G: I cut it in halves…

H: I cut it in halves…

G: One half for him…

H: One half for him…

G: One half for her…

H: One half for her…

B: (Laughing) It is so called “lyrics”!

M: (Laughing) Oh what a ‘golden idea’!

Scene 6

(In the monitor’s home)

Gr: Dinner coming!

G: Hey, why don’t we take a picture together?

M&B& H: Great idea!

M: Wait! Wait! I’ll get this!

H: It’s a tiger, isn’t it? Do tigers eat fish?

B: Of course tigers do not! But do you know the coming year is …

G: (Interrupt) the year of the tiger!

B: Fish in Chinese has the same sound as ‘more’.

M: So fish means a family is so rich that it cannot use up all it has, and there is always something MORE left for the next year.

H: Oh, it’s also quite meaningful and cute! Can I hold it?

M: Of course! Keep it!

H: Thanks a lot!

G: Now everybody, cheers!

All: Cheers!(Photo taken)
